Why have we started the Dry Eye Treatment Centre?

My journey with dry eye syndrome was not just about the discomfort; it was a profound experience that reshaped my understanding of health care and patient advocacy. After the initial diagnosis in 2017, I became determined to find a solution that truly addressed my symptoms. Each visit to Boots, Specsavers, and Vision Express left me feeling more frustrated than the last, as I diligently followed their advice, only to find minimal relief. I would go home, apply heat masks diligently, and use the recommended artificial tears, but the persistent dryness and irritation remained.

Even the NHS dry eye clinic, where I hoped to find more specialised support, offered little more than artificial tears, leaving me feeling disheartened and unsupported. It seemed that the conventional responses to dry eye syndrome were limited, and I was still struggling to find a path to relief.

As the pandemic unfolded, I faced new challenges that exacerbated my condition. The isolation and uncertainty brought on by COVID-19 not only impacted my physical health but also took a toll on my mental well-being. With lockdowns in place, I became increasingly reliant on my computer for work, social interaction, and entertainment. This significant increase in screen time made the dry eye problem worse, as staring at screens can reduce blink rates and lead to further eye strain. I realised the importance of having access to specialised care, particularly for conditions like dry eye, which often get overlooked.

This realisation motivated me to research extensively, connecting with online communities and learning about innovative treatments that were gaining traction in the field of ophthalmology. Through my research, I discovered therapies such as Intense Pulsed Light (IPL), which targets inflammation and improves meibomian gland function by stimulating the glands to produce essential oils that maintain tear film stability. I also learned about Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT), known for its pain-relieving properties and ability to enhance cellular repair, which can significantly reduce inflammation and promote healing in the ocular surface. Additionally, I found out about BlephEx, a revolutionary treatment that provides a deep cleaning of the eyelid margins, effectively removing debris and biofilm that contribute to dry eye symptoms.

The more I learned, the more motivated I became to create a space where individuals struggling with dry eye could find comprehensive treatment options. My journey took a significant turn when I finally found Yasmin, a clinician and expert in dry eye. Her extensive knowledge and experience in the field resonated deeply with me, and we quickly realised that our shared vision could lead to something impactful.

Together, we began to lay the groundwork for the Dry Eye Treatment Centre, fueled by the desire to provide a holistic approach to eye care. Opening on December 15th 2025 our centre will not only offer advanced treatments like IPL, LLLT, and BlephEx but also provide dietary and lifestyle guidance to help patients manage their condition more effectively.

We understand that eye health is interconnected with overall wellness, and we are committed to offering personalised advice that empowers individuals to make meaningful changes in their lives.

By sharing my journey and the lessons learned along the way, I hope to inspire others to seek the care they deserve and advocate for themselves in the pursuit of wellness. Together, we can break the cycle of ineffective solutions and pave the way for meaningful change in the treatment of dry eye syndrome, fostering a community of support and understanding for all those affected.
